When Matthew was as young as eight-years-old and discovered a love of writing, he wanted to be a world-famous author, akin to his great idols J.K Rowling or Stephen King. But as he grew up and felt pressure from his parents to be realistic about finding a career with a stable income, he was forced to be more realistic about how he could be more than just another starving artist. His short writing career has already touched almost every aspect of the publishing business, including working as a researcher, copyeditor, proofreader, blog writer, marketer, social media expert, novelist, magazine editor, and even a poet. This talk will follow the arc of his university education to his current role as a freelancer, and acknowledge the tricks of the trade he picked up along the way that helped him survive in the gig economy.
