Fuelled by a fervent energy, Nisha Patel’s confessional poems command the full attention of any room. At the heart of this collection is her father who occupies the complex space shared by both his unconditional love and his unyielding expectations for what it means to live a good life. With an honest and severe scrutiny, Patel examines every subject rooted in her familial relationships—including body issues, mental health, and misogyny—in order to wrestle with these struggles that shaped her. Assisted by a fiery vocabulary that befriends heavy-lifting metaphors, Patel’s poetry argues for a more empathetic world and will connect like a lifeline to anyone suffering from similar problems.
Nisha Patel is a poet and artist from Edmonton, Alberta. She is the 2016 Edmonton Indie Slam Champion, a finalist of the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam, and a finalist of the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word. She is a proud member of the Breath in Poetry Collective.
